Real Madrid have avoided the terrifying sight of their first outing in the Champions group stage.
The record-setting Spanish champions clearly beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-0 on Wednesday night and even ended up in Group B chaos first ahead of the Germans, Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter Milan. The three representatives of the German Bundesliga (Bayern, Dortmund and Gladbach) reached the round of 16.
In Group A in Salzburg, group champions Bayern beat lackluster Lok Moscow 2-0. Niklas Süle (62nd) after a corner kick with the head and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (80th) appeared as scorers for the German series champions. For Bayern, where David Alaba got a break, it was the fifth win in the sixth game. Left-back Alphonso Davies returned after a hiatus of several weeks due to a torn ankle ligament.
In Madrid, Karim Benzema (9th, 31st) scored two goals for Real, who scored the game against Borussia with Stefan Lainer in the star formation from the start. Valentino Lázaro was replaced again after the break. But even with the ÖFB team player, the Germans, who seemed exhausted and lacking in ideas, had no access. Hannes Wolf came into play in the 85th minute.
The Gladbachers were able to thank the protagonists of the second game, Inter and Schachtar, for allowing them to continue in the knockout phase of the Champions League. With 0-0 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, no one was served except the Bas-Rhin “colts”. However, the Ukrainians are moving towards the Europa League, while Inter can now fully concentrate on Italian competitions.
In Group C, Manchester City and FC Porto were already on the rise, and third place was secured thanks to the help of Olympiacos. The Greeks lost 2-0 at home to Porto as group champion ManCity celebrated a 3-0 win against Olympique Marseille, but stayed ahead of the tied French. Manchester survived the group stage like Bayern with five wins and one loss. Ferran Torres (48th), Sergio Agüero (77th) and Raheem Sterling (90th) scored for Pep Guardiola’s team.
