EU finances: Poland talks about a deal

“There is an agreement on the Warsaw-Berlin-Budapest triangle,” said Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Gowin. He believed that the other 24 EU capitals could also support this deal.

Germany and Hungary initially did not want to confirm the statements. Martina Fietz, deputy spokeswoman for the German government, referred to a statement by Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Bundestag. There he said about the possibilities of an agreement with Poland and Hungary: “Unfortunately, I still cannot tell you if that will work or not.”

“Safety brake”

According to the Polish edition of “Deutsche Welle”, the compromise contains three elements: an attached statement on the precise implementation of the rule of law, which emphasizes that the regulation affects the rule of law and EU finances, but not migration law or family. The second element is a “security brake”, according to which affected countries can request that the discussion on the disbursement of funds be postponed to the summit of EU heads of state and government. Third, it is a clarification of the regulation by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), only then should it be applicable.
