For the majority of the economically weaker third of the Austrian population, the situation has worsened due to the corona pandemic. This is demonstrated by the results of the current SORA Democracy Monitor. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) of this group have less money available, and more than half (53 percent) have greater psychological stress, according to the presentation of the representative study on Wednesday.
“The problem is that people feel they are being treated worse,” said Günther Ogris, managing director of the SORA Institute. This can be seen, for example, when you ask whether your own life is largely determined by others. While 21 percent of the top third responded very or quite, the bottom third gave 49 percent. “If you want to change something about it, it’s also about anchoring more equality,” Ogris said.
The differences between the economically stronger and weaker people are particularly strong when it comes to the effects of the corona pandemic. While in the top third only 19 percent are concerned about life planning, the figure is 38 percent in the middle third and 60 percent in the bottom third. A connection can be made from this, as explained by the study’s project leader, Martina Zandonella. “If the financial or psychological situation has worsened, confidence in democracy falls,” he said.
