The next playoff of the Champions League between Red Bull Salzburg and Atlético de Madrid (Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. on the LIVE ticker) does not leave Gerhard Struber, the coach of the New York Red Bulls, indifferent.
The 43-year-old, who was a long-time coach in Mozartstadt’s youth division and looked after some of the Bulls players at FC Liefering, believes Jesse Marsch’s team has what it takes to beat the current leaders of the Spanish league.
“I am very, very confident that the team will be able to match the performance that one is used to tomorrow in the Champions League,” Struber said during an online media meeting on Tuesday.
“I think the team did a great job promoting Red Bull football and developing talent. If you’ve watched the games, you can see the ways that great opponents have run into trouble over and over again that there’s a game idea here that has weapons that they can really hurt an opponent, “says Struber, who is convinced that the failed dress rehearsal in the 1-0 loss in the Bundesliga last weekend will no longer play a role.
“I definitely trust the team to achieve a really good result tomorrow and possibly also to get to the right place in the table,” said the Salzburg man.
Red Bull Salzburg needed a victory in their final group stage match against Spanish leaders Atlético de Madrid to make the historic promotion to the knockout stages of the Champions League. If this is not successful, the reigning double winner must wait for the help of FC Bayern, who must not lose to Lokomotiv Moscow. If the Russians win without total success for Salzburg, the latter would not even be represented in the Europa League.
