There was only a heap of smoldering ashes left from the mailbox and the furniture in the log cabin. The Christkindl Post Office opened here on November 27. Now all that remains is the charred skeleton of the Advent hut in the town square of Wels. The Christkindlhütte was destroyed by flames yesterday morning, the damage is at least 20,000 euros. The moral damage is probably greater.
“The cabin was in the middle of the fire, only the basic structure is still in place,” says Dominik Primetzhofer, chief of operations for the Wels fire department. “That brings you to him. After the Ledererturm was closed, the last place where children could write to the Christkindl also disappeared.”
Letters on security
But now for the good news. The mailbox was destroyed, but the letters are safe. “We emptied the mailbox for the last time on Saturday night,” says Peter Jungreithmair of Wels City Marketing. Instead of the usual Lederertum, this year Christkindl’s mailbox is in the town square because of the crown. “We have already received more than 500 letters,” says Jungreithmair. They will not let the fire knock them down, tomorrow Tuesday, a new hut should be back in the square.
Arson
“Soon everything will return to normal,” says Jungreithmair. “We certainly will not allow such vandalism to destroy the Christmas spirit.” However, the reason for the fire remains unclear. In urban marketing, we talk about arson.
A surveillance camera filmed two young people who were near the square at the time of the fire: a 21-year-old Welser and a 17-year-old from Grünberg (Kirchdorf district). During questioning, Welser stated that he had nothing to do with the fire. The 17-year-old declined to comment. He wanted to speak to his defense attorney first. (evil)
