In Upper Carinthia, due to extreme weather conditions of snow, rain, storms and the consequent risk of avalanches, some schools will not open on Monday, December 7. “Safety comes first,” said Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ). However, childcare in schools and kindergartens is guaranteed for children to come anyway, according to a broadcast from the country on Sunday afternoon.
“Due to bad weather conditions, schools will be declared free on December 7, 2020 in communities affected by heavy snow and rain,” said Education Officer and Governor Kaiser and Director of Education Robert Klinglmair. “The closure also applies to nurseries. For children who go to school or kindergarten, care in the place is guaranteed,” the governor emphasized. The school closure only applies to Monday, as there is no school on Tuesday due to the holiday, Klinglmair explained.
The following schools are affected: Heiligenblut, Mörtschach, Großkirchheim, Winklern, Stall im Mölltal, Rangersdorf, Flattach, Mallnitz, Obervellach, Kötschach-Mauthen and Rennweg primary schools. The closure also applies to Winklern National Park Middle School, Obervellach Middle School, Kötschach-Mauthen Music Middle School, Lesachtal Education Center (middle school with elementary classes) and Rennweg Middle School.
Schools in East Tyrol and in the back of Ötztal will also be closed on Monday.
The state of Tirol announced that there will be no lessons in all schools on Monday due to the tense weather situation. This also applies to the rear Ötztal, he said. The Directorate of Education had taken appropriate measures on the recommendation of the two responsible district authorities.
Lienz District Chief Olga Reisner also announced that an armed forces Black Hawk helicopter will carry out so-called “downwash work” on snow-laden trees to release the snow load, as well as reconnaissance flights. Releasing heavily snowy roofs will also be a problem. Attention was also drawn to the dangers of freeing house roofs from snow loads.
