WAC celebrated a narrow 1-0 away win against CSKA Moscow on matchday five of the Europa League group stage. Dario Vizinger scored the decisive goal in the 22nd minute. WAC edged Feyenoord in second place. In the next week, the Carinthians have a final against the Dutch to move up to the 16th.

Dario Vizinger scores the WAC with a dream goal to victory

Carinthians got off to a good start in cold Moscow: Ferdinand Feldhofer’s protégés acted with great confidence on the ball and played forward with determination. The WAC’s first dangerous attack on Scherzer was cleared by Diveev to the corner (5th). The locals found the first great opportunity: Maradishvili crossed from the right to the penalty area, where Chalov arrived with a header. He put it very softly past Kofler’s goal (11th). Shortly after, Nikola Vlasic refueled and served Oblyakov, who missed Kofler from about 13 meters (14º).

In the middle of the phase in which the Russians had more game and were also more dangerous, Dario Vizinger hit with a wonderful goal. The Croatian prevailed in a duel against Schennikov, taking measurements from 30 meters and carving the leather into the goal through the lower edge of the crossbar, a dream goal to make it 0: 1 (22). Five minutes later, Dario Vizinger was 2-0 on his foot, but Magnusson stopped him in the last second (27).

In the 40th minute, the Carinthia visitors came very close to the second goal: Peretz’s first shot after a nice combination with Scherzer before Vizinger took the lead on the sidelines over the goal. After an attractive first half, WAC went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Even after the break, the WAC tried to take control of the game. Eliel Peretz had a good shooting position shortly after the restart, but CSKA goalkeeper Akinfeev scratched the ball off the line (46th). Ten minutes later, a shot by substitute Gaich missed (55th).

Meanwhile, snowfall in the Russian capital has increased significantly. The Wolfsbergs were not discouraged by this, they defended well and hardly allowed a dangerous conclusion for the Russians. The Russians closed again in the 75th minute, but Vlasic’s shot was blocked for a corner. Soon after, Kofler stopped a long-range shot from Bistrovic. In the end, the Wolves took the important away win over time and are now second in the table in Group K.

Due to Dinamo Zagreb’s simultaneous away win against Feyenoord Rotterdam, Wolfsberger AC have a final against the Dutch on Thursday in a week.
