Austria is under the influence of pronounced exposure to the south and in eastern Tyrol and Upper Carinthia extreme amounts of snow are to be expected.
On Friday Austria will gradually fall under the influence of a large low called VIRPY with a core over England. A stormy current from the south surges in the mountains and south of the main alpine range, heavy rainfall occurs from Friday night, lasting until Sunday night. In East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, as well as directly in the main Alpine range, there are huge rains.
Storm foehn on Friday
On Friday there is a stormy southern foehn across the northern side of the Alps, which in some valleys brings strong gusts of wind of 80 to 100 km / h. With temporary sunshine, temperatures rise up to 11 degrees. In the afternoon, the foehn ends west of Innsbruck, at the same time that it begins to snow in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. On Saturday night this is getting more intense.
Heavy snow storm
On Saturday and Sunday, a marginal low over northern Italy ensures heavy snowfall and sometimes thunderstorms in eastern Tyrol and Upper Carinthia. The snow line in East Tyrol is still in the valleys, but the snow is getting wetter and wetter at lower altitudes. On Sunday, the rain sometimes mixes below 1,000 meters. In Lower Carinthia, by contrast, the snowfall line increased from 1,000 to 1,500 meters on Saturday. In the east of the northern and eastern Alps, on the other hand, it remains foehn with temperatures of up to 12 degrees.
Some snow in the west
It also snows heavily on the main Alpine ridge and with the arrival of a cold front some fresh snow can also be expected in Vorarlberg, in the Tyrolean Oberland and in Ausserfern. In Pinzau and Pongau, however, large amounts of rain are forecast, especially in the Tauern area. The snow line is on the north side of the Alps between the valley locations at Vorarlberg and a good 1,500 meters at Pongau.
Generous amounts
In total, 250 to 350 liters per square meter can be expected in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia from Friday night to Sunday night. On the mountain, more than two meters of fresh snow collects which, in combination with the strong wind, carries a great risk of avalanches. In the valleys of East Tyrol and Upper West Carinthia, however, more than 1 meter of fresh snow can be expected in some places.
However, due to the increasingly wet snow, an increasing risk of snow breakage must be taken into account. Especially on Sundays, the risk of local floods and landslides increases in Upper Carinthia and in the Salzburg Tauern valleys. You can only hope the weather calms down on Sunday night.
