For the logistics industry, the Christmas season is otherwise a mega business. But this year, store closures are causing the flood of packages to erupt. “One volume record after another is falling in the Austrian Post,” the state-owned company announced on Thursday. In the last three days, more than a million packages were transported per day. Compared to the previous year, the number of parcels has increased by almost 40 percent.
“We have prepared well for the peak season throughout the year, the run-up to Christmas in the Corona year exceeds even our highest expectations,” Post chief Georg Pölzl said, according to a broadcast. Therefore, Swiss Post is appealing to people to place their orders in advance and plan ahead that the delivery could take a bit longer. In the context of the huge number of packages, packages would be sorted and delivered in the run-up to Christmas, but also on weekends.
The peak of the 2019 Christmas season was reached on December 11 with 765,000 packages distributed. On average days, more than 800,000 packages are currently transported per day, and record numbers can still be expected, as in recent days, until Christmas Eve.
To cope with these volumes, the post has increased staff and increased the number of vehicles in operation. Currently up to 1,300 additional workers are used and the corresponding additional vehicles required for this, such as trucks, containers and delivery vehicles. (apa)
