The 331st Vienna derby between Rapid and Austria ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. The hosts took the lead in the seventh minute at the end of Bundesliga matchday 9, Patrick Wimmer tied in the 19th minute. Rapid remains third, the gap with leader Red Bull Salzburg increased to four points. Austria, which is in eighth place, does not have a point in sixth place.

Hütteldorfer posted a clear increase in chances, but failed time and again due to Austrian goalkeeper Patrick Pentz and his own inability. Grün-Weiß’s seventh attempt to defeat his archrivals at the Allianz Stadium also failed.

Rapid started without Taxiarchis Fountas, but with the recovered Marcel Ritzmaier and got off to a better start. In the third minute, Ercan Kara moved from a good position, four minutes later it was 1-0. After a cross from Maximilian Ullmann, Schick sank a volley with his weaker left foot into the far corner.

Austria’s response followed in the 19th minute. Wimmer headed a Manprit Sarkaria free-kick cross into the short corner, where Rapid, as so often in recent weeks, revealed weaknesses on set pieces. Even in an Austrian corner in the 34th minute it got tricky, Rapid goalkeeper Paul Gartler stopped an attempt by Erik Palmer-Brown just before the line.

Hütteldorfer clearly had better chances in the first half. In the 23rd minute Christoph Knasmüllner missed after Ritzmaier’s squad from close range to Patrick Pentz, the Austria goalkeeper was also on the post when Kara fired.

Shortly before the break, Rapid’s pressure increased. Kara headed in from a good position (36th), a shot by Mateo Barac in the penalty area was blocked by Palmer-Brown (40th). In the course of the corner ball that followed, Pentz performed two more brilliant acts. He first stopped a Maximilian Hofmann header, then acrobatically defended Srdjan Grahovac’s margin while on the goal line.

The second half started with a counter opportunity for Austria – Gartler blocked a shot from Benedikt Pichler (51.) – before Rapid took command again. Pentz again distinguished himself with a header from Hofmann (53rd) and was lucky that the Rapid central defender missed the goal from close range when he fell (54th).

In the 59th minute Kara also missed the goal from five, in the 76th minute Pentz struggled with a shot from Ritzmaier. Six minutes later, the keeper would have been beaten, but substitute Yusuf Demir’s long-range shot landed on the outside post.

In the finals, Austria trembled to win the point despite the permanent camp of their own sixteen at the finish line. Rapid has been waiting for victory for three laps. The “Veilchen” have been unsuccessful for five league games.
