The start of the World Cup season for slides at Igls ended on Sunday with another Austrian double. After triumphing in the “normal” race on Saturday, Thomas Steu / Lorenz Koller hit in the sprint this time. The women also set an exclamation point: Madeleine Egle finished her first previous result in fifth place, Lisa Schulte, 19, achieved a personal best with sixth place.
Steu / Koller prevailed in Sunday’s sprint against Latvians Andris and Juris Sics (+0.091 seconds) and Ludwig Rieder / Patrick Rastner (+0.102) from South Tyrol. Austrians Yannick Müller / Armin Frauscher, second on Saturday, had to settle for seventh place (+0.228) this time.
For women, 22-year-old Egle, who ranked 13th overall at the World Cup in the previous two seasons, is still a bit upset despite the good result: after the first race, she was third, fell back a little in the second race and therefore missed the first. Jump to the podium. The race turned into a German triumphal procession: Julia Taubitz, winner of the World Cup from the previous season, won, her compatriots Natalie Geisenberger and Dajana Eitberger rushed to second and third place after the baby breaks.
There were consistently good red-white-red results in the relay competition and in the individual sprints. Egle, Müller and two-seater Thomas Steu / Lorenz Koller, who were victorious on Saturday, were 0.030 seconds behind Schwarz-Rot-Gold in the team race and 0.121 seconds ahead of the Russian third-placed.
In the men’s sprint, behind German winner Felix Loch David Gleirscher (+0.088 seconds) and Jonas Müller (+0.091) landed on the podium. In the female category, Hannah Prock was the best Austrian in fifth, Egle was sixth, Schulte eleventh. As in the “standard race”, the German podium was Taubitz-Geisenberger-Eitberger.
