Green MP Michel Reimon criticized the ÖVP on Friday, tweeting about “made-up” plans to attack churches and false promises for the ski season.

Green MP Michel Reimon expressed public doubts on Friday about the information provided by Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) about the attack in Vienna on November 2. Specifically, Reimon accused the coalition partner’s minister of having fabricated the attacker’s plans to attack churches. After a conversation with Nehammer, Reimon put the accusation in perspective. The SPÖ criticized the dispute as “extremely unworthy”.

Nehammer announced Thursday that churches will be increasingly policed. It could not be ruled out that “the perpetrator wanted to look for victims in the churches,” said the minister. Because Nehammer did not provide further details and referred to the prosecutor’s office when asked, Reimon suspected the day that the story as a whole could be wrong.

SPÖ wants to address the allegations

Specifically, the Green MP was outraged by Nehammer’s appearance and by statements made by ÖVP Minister of Tourism Elisabeth Köstinger on “ZiB2” the day before. Reimon released a photo via Twitter in which the Green Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler is promoting a € 5,000 grant for electric cars. “You can also invent plans to attack churches or pretend that there is a ski season, but that is better,” said the deputy.

The SPÖ was happy to broach the issue and announced that it would address Reimon’s allegations in the National Council’s “Secret Service Committee” next week. “This dispute is not only extremely unworthy, it also endangers security in Austria,” said SP security spokesman Reinhold Einwallner.

Reimon tweeted in anger.

Reimon himself relativized his accusation after a conversation with Interior Minister Nehammer and justified his tweet with his anger at the turquoise communication strategy. “Inventing is not right, it was about getting angry. We have to communicate this without scare tactics,” said the parliamentarian when asked by the APA. The Interior Ministry declined to comment on the cause. Instead, ÖVP security spokesman Karl Mahrer came out to praise the “courageous and competent approach of the interior minister.” The fact that Nehammer informs the public about a danger shows his sense of responsibility.
