After the death of Diego Maradona, the body of the Argentine soccer idol was deposited in the government palace of Buenos Aires. The coffin with the remains was taken to Casa Rosada in an ambulance Thursday night, local media reported. Thousands of people lined up before dawn to say goodbye to Maradona. Family members and close friends had already been admitted.

When the doors were opened in the morning after a security check, fans passed the coffin covered with an Argentine flag to pay their last respects to the 1986 world champions. Many cried, others threw t-shirts with the number 10 above the barrier, as seen in television pictures. “Thank you Diego, thank you! (Thanks Diego, thanks!) ”, A man shouted through tears as he passed the coffin.

The government expects up to a million mourners. Faced with the corona pandemic, the authorities asked people to comply with the protection measures. The head of state, Alberto Fernández, had ordered a three-day state duel.

Maradona died Wednesday at his home in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires. The autopsy confirmed that the 60-year-old man had died of a heart attack, media said. Maradona was found dead in his bed on Wednesday around 11:30 a.m. local time. A nephew had probably been the last to see him alive the night before around 11pm.
