During pregnancy, women are assigned to the corona risk group. To better protect them at work, they will have the right to leave work from December. Kindergarten teachers, physical therapists, hairdressers, stylists, beauticians, piercers, and masseurs are affected.
Employers will be reimbursed the remuneration paid. VP Green’s application will be decided today, Thursday, in the Social Committee.
Risk from the third month of pregnancy
In advanced pregnancy, not in the first three months, there is a higher probability of a severe course of a COVID-19 infection according to new medical findings from the ÖGGG (Austrian Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics). Therefore, Labor Minister Christine Aschbacher (ÖVP) wants to protect pregnant women and their unborn babies with the right to exemption where no minimum distance is possible.
Except freelancers
According to estimates by the Ministry of Labor, some 4,500 pregnant women in professions related to the body are affected, and around 10 million euros a month are expected for the reimbursement of salaries. The app does not include the self-employed, but talks are already underway with the Ministry of Social Affairs responsible for their maternity leave, Aschbacher said in a statement. However, it includes all employees, federal employees, agricultural workers, and the self-employed.
As of mid-December, the regulation comes into force after the decision of the National Council (December 10/11) and the Federal Council (December 16/17), first it will be checked whether other protective measures can be taken or whether home office possible. If not, exemption is possible. Like all Covid regulations, the measure is provisionally limited to March 2021. The situation is then assessed.
