After the investigation findings that the Vienna attacker specifically searched for victims in places of worship, the police must now monitor churches as a preventive measure.

The killer, who killed four bystanders in the attack in central Vienna on November 2, may have been looking for victims in churches before the police shot him. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) announced this on Thursday with reference to the relevant investigation findings at Minoritenplatz.

Nehammer on church surveillance in “particularly sensitive phase”

Nehammer announced increased surveillance of churches and places of worship. The interior minister feared that one was in a “particularly delicate phase” because a terrorist attack could draw copycat criminals. Nehammer did not elaborate, because the prosecution had the “exclusive right” to share the new findings with the public.
