Salzburg lose too many opportunities with Bayern

Red Bull Salzburg suffered a 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.

FC Bayern Munich were too big for Austrian soccer champion Salzburg in the Champions League on the second try. The “cops” had to admit defeat to the insensitive defending champion 1: 3 (0: 1) in Munich on Wednesday. Bayern arranged premature promotion to the round of 16 after four group stage matches, the trend-setting match against Lok Moscow to remain international awaits Salzburg.

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski was successful before the break (43.). After an own goal by Maximilian Wöber (52nd), and a header by Leroy Sane (68th), the score was 3-0 before Mergim Berisha scored the well-deserved goal for Salzburg (73rd). Also yellow-red for Marc Roca (66th) from Bayern could not change anything in the 15th victory of the Germans in the premier class.

Salzburg’s chances of advancing are intact given that they are four points behind second Atletico Madrid (0-0 against Lok Moscow) before the final two rounds of Group A. However, they will need the help of Bavaria. On December 1, Jesse Marsch’s team could take third place with a victory in Moscow, which would mean a move to the Europa League.

New with ten parades against Salzburg

Once again in this special year 2020, Salzburg kicked off the game after a minute of silence. On Wednesday the late Argentine soccer icon Diego Maradona (60) was commemorated. Marsch decided three weeks after the 2: 6, when his team collapsed at the finish, again because of the gritty, race-intensive approach, but with a slightly more defensive orientation. His eleven, unchanged in terms of personnel compared to the first duel, played in an oddball with Mergim Berisha as the hanging point behind Sekou Koita.

The local team had the first maximum chances. After a rebound in the middle, Serge Gnabry volleyed just off goal (10th). The guests did not hide, they energetically got into the duels and thus ensured an open exchange of blows in the match at the Munich Allianz Arena, which was played without spectators for the crown.

A bad pass from David Alaba gave the Salzburgs their first maximum chances in the quarter hour: Koita beat Berisha, who failed in a heads-up against Manuel Neuer. Enock Mwepu did not hit the ball correctly when the shot was made (15th).

The scene seemed to give the stranger a boost. The match was even in long stretches, the offensive players from Salzburg managed several times to move the Bayern defense, which had been weakened in terms of personnel. In the 35th minute Dominik Szoboszlai was 1-0 on his foot: Berisha saw Hungary completely free in the middle, but the highly talented man crashed the synthetic leather into the clouds in front of Neuer.

Despite the increased pace, Bayern had only two half chances from Lewandowski (27th, 29th), but still went into the break with a 1-0 lead. Salzburg goalkeeper Cican Stankovic could only let a full shot from Thomas Müller bounce forward, Lewandowski dusted off a special goal. With his 71st goal in the Champions League, the Pole tied third-placed Spanish Raúl González for the all-time top scorer. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (131) and Lionel Messi (118) have scored more frequently in the premier class.

The difference in quality compared to the goal

After the optimal finish, Bayern got off to an optimal start in the second half: Coman dribbled to the middle in the 52nd minute, wandered away from the penalty area and Wöber deflected the shot on an unsustainable shot for Stankovic. Hansi Flick’s team had everything under control then, Marc Roca’s yellow and red card after the second yellow foul on Zlatko Junzovic (66th) made the game only partially exciting. Coman served substitute Sane with a measured flank on Salzburg’s messy defensive center, Sane headed in (68.)

In terms of efficiency, the class difference was more evident that day. This was demonstrated by a missed triple chance when Salzburg failed each time over Neuer (70th). Three minutes later, after a low cross from Rasmus Kristensen, Berisha scored the well-deserved consolation goal.
