Starting Wednesday, many public buildings in Vienna will again glow orange on the occasion of the “16 days against violence against women” campaign.

The UN global campaign “Orange the World – 16 Days Against Violence Against Women” begins on November 25 and aims to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. Several initiatives are aimed at raising awareness that violence against women and girls, as a massive violation of human rights, has long-lasting consequences for the people affected, but also for society as a whole.

All over the world, public buildings are covered in orange light for this reason. The campaign lasts 16 days, between the International Day against Violence against Women and Girls on November 25 and the International Human Rights Day on December 10.

The “Orange the World” campaign has been implemented by UN Women Austria, Soroptimist International Austria, the Ban Ki-Moon Center for Global Citizens and HeForShe Graz since 2017. It is integrated into the United Nations Secretary-General’s campaign, “UNITE to end violence against women by 2030 “, and addresses the scope and various forms of violence against women.

Violence against women in Austria

Domestic violence is a problem that is not only present in times of confinement. Around 20 per cent of all Austrian women aged 15 years and over are affected by physical or sexual violence. The number of women in Austria who have suffered sexual harassment is around 35 percent. However, in many cases no ads are displayed. That is why the UN campaign focuses on raising awareness, preventing and reacting.

As in the last three years, the sponsorship of “Orange the World” will once again be the actress Ursula Strauss. Actively participate in the fight against violence against women and girls. Strauss advocates that victims of violence have the opportunity to position themselves in public with their experiences.

The buildings glow orange

In the next two weeks, more than 160 buildings across Austria will light up in orange. In the federal capital these include the Theater in der Josefstadt, the Federal Chancellery, the Raiffeisenhaus on the Danube Canal, the Albertina, the Parliament, the Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, and the Funkhaus Wien.

The goal is to send a visible signal against violence against women and girls.

Ministry of the Interior also orange for the first time

The Home Office will also glow orange for the first time. “It is very important to me that the Ministry of the Interior participates in this campaign for the first time this year. By participating, we are sending a clear signal against violence against women and children and we want to help raise awareness,” said the Minister of the Interior, Karl Nehammer.

“Every victim of domestic violence is too much,” Nehammer continued.

“The great challenge for the police is that they are informed about the violence. We can only intervene when they call us,” said the interior minister. “The main thing is to raise awareness. Especially in times of pandemic, wherever there is greater pressure on families, it is important to look where to look.”

Therefore, the most important message is: “If the victims feel threatened, if the women are afraid, then there is a telephone number that must always be dialed, which is 133.”

Roll call of Van der Bellen

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen also sent an important message via Twitter video on the occasion of today’s International Day Against Violence against Women and Girls. “Don’t look away!” He appealed.

Violence against women and girls has many causes, “such as wrong role models or the glorification of violence, in addition to the Covid 19 pandemic with all its problems.” The message from the head of state:

“Just as we have to fight the pandemic together, the fight against violence against women and girls must also be undertaken together.”
