He wants to accompany the substantive and structural realignment of the party, for which a separate commission will be formed “in the coming weeks” and “prepare well” for his successor at the top, Hebein said in his statements made on Saturday at the state assembly . In any case, until he leaves, he will play the role of party leader “on an honorary basis.” In fact, Hebein was elected to her executive position until the end of 2021.
Greens: Hebein’s future role is unclear
The role he will play in the future with the Vienna Greens is still completely open. Just this: “I am deeply connected to the party and I will be true to the green idea.” The founding of the party itself is “completely excluded”.
Rift at the party?
Hebein also repeated his diagnosis that there was a gap at the party, specifically between the town hall club and the base. The “maneuver” in which the majority of leaders did not choose her as the first elected on the list to preside over the club or non-executive councilor, caused internal irritations. The question now is: “How do we get the club and the party back together?” Because it is important that both cooperate “closely”.
The deputy mayor and councilor for Transport, who will have to leave her post on Tuesday at the end of the red-green era, recalled that she had been elected by a large majority as the maximum candidate and leader of the party in November 2018. As such, now it has achieved the best result historically in the Vienna elections. And then “a few” would have decided not to entrust more functions. “The former residents of the club have prevailed,” says Hebein.
How this could be achieved and, above all, how a similar situation can be avoided in the future, will now be debated in a committee that will be created. It is not yet known how exactly this process will work and who will be represented on the committee. Hebein himself emphasized once again on Monday that in the past 17 months, since taking office as deputy mayor and head of department, he had never cared about “power” in the club, but had always focused on content. . That was his conscious decision.
Hebein: “Politics is sometimes tough”
“And yes, politics is difficult sometimes,” he said of his non-nomination in the ranks of the green city council. As for his successor at the top of the party, he has no preferred candidate, assured the still boss.
Did you make mistakes? “Sure even,” Hebein said. She is simply not a comfortable politician. “My biggest mistake was underestimating how soon the SPÖ will enter the election campaign,” he admitted. Because as of the spring it was no longer possible to implement projects that had already been agreed with the coalition partner, such as the quiet urban center or the mandatory turnaround assistant, which had been ready for signature since July. She finds it a shame that the red-green does not continue: “It was the only progressive government in all of Austria.” The SPÖ had taken a “purely political power decision”, the content of which is incomprehensible.
The opposition bank as an opportunity
For the Greens, the opposition bench is also an opportunity: “The Vienna Greens will be louder.” Because now one no longer has to make concessions, but can “openly approach many things” and “aggressively” advertise the projects to the population. Hebein claims that his party has set standards in the area of climate protection, for example, that there is no turning back.
“Much of the role of the coalition is green politics”, hence its verdict on the government pact of the SPÖ and NEOS. It will now be “closely watched” that “ambitious targets” such as CO2 neutrality by 2040 and halving traffic emissions in the next ten years are also implemented by Red-Pink. And Hebein made people sit up and take notice with the announcement that the Greens in the capital would also “constructively increase criticism of the federal government (turquoise green, footnote).”
Hebein also used today’s background discussion as an opportunity to assess the content of his tenure. It was possible to give the city a green signature. As examples, he cited the introduction of climate protection areas, where oil and gas can no longer be used for heating and cooling in new buildings, the creation of the heat map and the measures derived from it, such as “cool streets”, creating more space for pedestrians in public spaces o Large-scale tree planting. For her it was “a pleasure and a privilege” to be able to contribute something to this city as deputy mayor.
