Kurz welcomes Kerry’s appointment as a US climate officer.

“We look forward to working with the new US climate officer John Kerry, with whom I worked closely as foreign minister during the Iran, Syria and Libya talks in Vienna,” Kurz said in a statement to the APA.

“The EU, which has already set itself ambitious climate targets, cannot save the climate by itself, but only together with the United States and China,” the foreign minister continued.

Kerry, 76, who served as US Secretary of State between 2013 and 2017 under President Barack Obama, will serve on the US National Security Council in his new role. By appointing Kerry, the president-elect is expressing that global warming is seen as an “urgent national security issue,” Biden’s transition team said Monday.

According to the official calendar, Biden will take office on January 20, even if incumbent Donald Trump has refused to admit his electoral defeat since the election nearly three weeks ago. So far he has boycotted the transfer of official business.
