Daniil Medvedev did not look too good for a long time in the final of the 2020 ATP Finals. His opponent Dominic Thiem had the match under control for much of the playing time, but missed half the second set by preliminary decision. After 2:42 hours it was the Russian who won the last title of the year.

It was probably the “best victory of his life,” Medvedev said after the disputed three-set victory. On the one hand, the 24-year-old attributed it to the level he showed, on the other hand, it was great to have beaten Dominic Thiem, who was in top form.

“I think he played at his best today. I don’t know. Maybe that’s not the case, but that’s how I felt during the game,” Medvedev said. In any case, it was “the most difficult success” of his life, because “Dominic is a really difficult opponent to play.”

Medvedev expects a long rivalry with Thiem

“If Dominic plays like he does today, he is one of the best players in history. Maybe not when it comes to titles or Grand Slams, but when he plays (in this way, note),” said fourth place in the world, Thiem Rosen. Medvedev is particularly proud to have tired the Austrian in a best-of-three match: “I think it’s a great success.”

Medvedev hopes that the final of the ATP Finals will be just a small part of a great duel with Thiem. “Hopefully we can play many games on the big stages.” For the Austrian, the Russian sees no limits: “He is an incredible player who will probably win many more titles.”
