The start of the slalom season was successful from a red-white-red point of view: Katharina Liensberger finished on the podium in the first slalom at Levi, and three more Austrians landed in the top 10.
Liensberger didn’t miss much in the first win. Strictly speaking, only the first goals of that day. From the first half time onwards, the Vorarlberg woman was at eye level in both races with the winners Petra Vlhova and Mikaela Shiffrin – she was the fastest on the steep incline.
The 23-year-old knows that she still has potential on the flat: “It was already the theme during training that I have to make the most of the flat even at low speed. Now I have one more day, I hope tomorrow will be even better.”
The Austrians also established the podium series at Levi there, with Bernadette Schild in 2018 and third in 2019.
“I notice I have the train”
On the steep incline, Liensberger was fastest in both races. “I just wanted to do the curves and it seems I have succeeded,” he analyzes.
It is positive that there is still room for improvement. “I think there are twists in which I realize: there I have the train. Now the goal is to make the most of these twists with me.”
Vlhova: “The second race was more difficult”
After January 10, 2017, when Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter won at Flachau, only Shiffrin or Vlhova won the World Cup slaloms. Now there are 27 in a row.
“The second race was more difficult. I was at the top the last one, I wanted to confirm that, there was some pressure,” explained Vlhova, who leads the World Cup overall after two races.
Shiffrin: “Fun and wonderful”
As expected, Shiffrin returned in force. Following the victory at the Bansko Super-G in late January, the sudden death of her father had thrown her emotionally.
An earlier return to the ski circuit prevented the corona pandemic in March and back problems in October, so he was not present at the opening of the World Cup in Sölden. “It’s a bit weird to be back, but it’s also wonderful. I’m happy to be here,” Shiffrin said.
ÖSV strong as a team
The second best Austrian was the troupe in seventh position, which did not start in the first round. “I slept well from the beginning, that should work better tomorrow. The second was already much more active, so I am happy with the result,” said the third last year.
Chiara Mair catapulted from 16th place with the seventh fastest time run to eighth. “It was very difficult for me, I didn’t have a good experience with Levi. So the first race was a success for me,” Mair said.
Junior World Champion Talent Test
Three-time junior world champion Magdalena Egger put her talent to the test in her third World Cup race with 19th place. “At the top I could attack, at the steep part I didn’t believe it. But tomorrow I’ll take a lot. trust”.
The 35th Bernadette Schild did not make it to the second heat, for her it was the first slalom after the cruciate ligament tear suffered in October 2019. Franziska Gritsch, Katharina Gallhuber and Bernadette Lorenz were eliminated in the first heat, as was the winner of the World Cup Federica Brignone (Italy) in the final.
