Hebein on the dismantling of the club: “Crack in our party” – politics

Green Deputy Mayor Birgit Hebein announced a “programmatic process” and clear regulation of her successor as party leader.

Today Saturday, the Vienna Greens held their 83rd national assembly, for the first time online only. Party leader Birgit Hebein made a speech at the beginning and spoke for the first time after her dismantling into her own municipal club. Until now, Hebein had only commented on internal party events in recent days in posts on social media. Now he wanted to speak in “plain text”, as he said in his speech.

“Yes, there is a gap in our party. It can be clearly felt,” he said.

Precisely this crack is responsible for her not being elected to a managerial position in the city council on Monday. Hebein ran for both the club chief position and one of the two positions as a non-executive councilor. In all three cases, however, the green leaders refused to give their consent. The green town hall club had elected former planning spokesperson Peter Kraus and career changer Judith Pühringer as non-executive directors. David Ellensohn was appointed the new club boss.

The party council was decided by a committee

As a result of the defeat in the vote, Hebein resigned his seat on the council, but decided to remain leader of the party.

Hebein also described in his speech that the party council also decided in committee on Friday “because we don’t want to go back on the agenda.” The goal of this committee is to accept what happened. This should determine where there are structural gaps that have been overlooked: “Because it is important to learn from it, because it is important that this does not happen to us again or that we fall into some kind of crisis.”

“I will continue accompanying the programmatic process”

But now a programmatic process is needed within the party, Hebein said. As the leader of the party, you want to help shape this and also ensure that your succession is resolved. He made it known that this handover could likely take place before the end of 2021, with the role of party leader under the party statute until the end of 2021.

“As president of the party, I will continue accompanying this programmatic process. Because I see an opportunity in it.” And he went on to say: “I will do it in the next few weeks and will also participate to ensure that my succession is clearly arranged.”

“In the form of Vienna”

In his speech, Hebein also took stock of ten years of red-green and referred to important milestones and projects such as the 365 euro public transport ticket, the renovation of Mariahilfer Strasse, the minimum rent and the new building regulations.

“We shaped Vienna. We shaped Vienna in such a way that there is no going back.”

For her, the SPÖ and NEOS programs are “a continuation of our achievements”. But now the Greens have a chance to be a strong opposition. “Now we were in a coalition, we had to make a lot of compromises. We often swallowed hard and those times are long past. We still have to deal a bit with how far antisocial democratization has advanced in our party. But what do we do? Now you have a chance to be very clear about what is happening. ”

In addition to ecological “problems of the heart” such as climate protection and social policy, Hebein also intends to address more and more other problems in the future. For example, issues related to politics or the integration of women should again play an increasingly important role.
