Mega hit at Mödling – A gang cleared Raika Mödling’s lockers, the damage could amount to millions.
It’s hard to believe: Raiffeisenbank Mödling’s lockers are empty. As a general rule, there is plenty of cash (partly black money), gold, currency, diamonds, and other valuables in lockers. And Raika Mödling in particular was proud of the modern locker system and the system works differently than many other banks.
The cassette comes by elevator
Because the lockers are located in a high security room in the basement, which the customer does not enter. Simply enter the lobby with the help of a card and access the data. The cassette is then sent to a compartment by elevator, so that the customer can access the contents of the cassette 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. According to “Kurier”, numerous celebrities are among the clients of the Mödlinger Raiffeisenbank.
At other banks, the system is even more outdated, but probably more secure. Here it is necessary to enter the safe during the opening hours, the supervisor and the customer each have a key for the locker and then they have to go through the door and then unlock the locker together and then close it again. At Oberbank or Bank Austria, for example, only supervisors and clients can open the locker together. “The two-key principle is just standard here. I don’t know if all banks do this, or if one key is sufficient for other banks,” says a longtime banker who has just worked at Oberbank and Bank Austria.
But an international gang could have managed to bypass the Raika software and steal the lockers without anyone noticing. The criminals did not even leave classic traces of theft.
Instead of € 30,000 there was nothing on the cassette
The case was exposed because a businessman’s cassette was suddenly empty: instead of the content of around 30,000 euros, there was only a huge vacuum. The customer complained that the bank did not believe him at first and said that perhaps a relative had emptied the cassette. Only the police investigated the matter and finally discovered the full extent of the hit. According to investigators, the thieves were absolute professionals. It cannot be ruled out whether insiders participated in the coup.
In the next few days, all locker safe owners have to go to Raika Mödling in person and see what and how much is missing. The executive assumes a very high level of damage, which could amount to millions.
Liability problem
On Thursday, the forensic department of the State Criminal Police Office tried to secure the few traces at the crime scene in Babenbergerstadt.
The question of liability could pose a problem: content is usually insured only against theft, fire or force majeure up to 3,000 or 5,000 euros. An additional insurance of 20 to 70 euros per year increases the amount of coverage considerably, only that probably not all owners have additional insurance.
