A fire broke out in a subway station in Berlin-Zehlendorf on Sunday night. Large numbers of firefighters battled the flames that spread to the roof of the Uncle Toms Hut stop. “We have to painstakingly create a lot of openings in the roof for extinguishing work,” said a fire department spokesman shortly before midnight.

The situation is now under control, the fire brigade announced on Twitter early Monday morning, this was preceded by a multi-hour mission involving around 120 firefighters. There were reports of four injured overnight. A seriously injured person was taken to a special clinic with burns. Three people suffered minor injuries.

The fire first broke out in a store at the subway station and then spread, the spokesman said. During the night it was already clear that at least three stores were affected by the flames. The cause of the fire and the amount of damage are not yet clear.

“There’s a lot of smoke nuisance here,” the fire department spokesman said at the scene. Because there is a nearby residential area, some residents should have left their apartments.

A photo from the fire department showed tall flames coming from a roof. “Our drone takes pictures with the thermal imaging camera in the areas that we can no longer enter,” said emergency services on Twitter after the fire was under control. The openings in the ceiling were created with special saws. According to the fire department, the THW was also in action.

The U3 subway line between Breitenbachplatz and Krumme Lanke was interrupted due to the fire service. According to the BVG, a replacement bus service was installed. “We are still at the scene,” a fire department spokesman said in the morning. About 15 firefighters are still in action.
