Orban: “The good Austrians are our laboratory”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is turning heavily towards Austria in the fight against the crown pandemic. “We are also lucky, because here we have these good Austrians, whom we call our ‘brothers-in-law’, but who now also function as a laboratory, because they are still a week ahead of us,” Orban told Hungarian television on Friday. He called Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) and “asked” about the measures.

Austria was Hungary’s “reconnaissance unit,” Orban said. “We follow them.” He briefly told her “that in your opinion your measurements will show the first results after two weeks.” Because the Hungarian measures are “similar”, it is “correct if we do the math,” the right-wing conservative politician said. So you will only be able to say in two weeks if larger gatherings will be possible again for Christmas.

Orban also raised hopes for a quick vaccine. “In late December, early January” there will be a “relief” because the vaccine will be limited. In April “you will experience a feeling of liberation,” he announced that the vaccine will be widely distributed.

Orban was skeptical about school closings and argued about the need for attention. “Only the very rich can afford not to stay at home. So most people take it away from work and people don’t want that,” Orban said.
