The government announced a new comprehensive “blockade” until December 6, including Saturday afternoon. Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s appeal: “Don’t know anyone.”

As a result, commerce with the known exceptions since spring, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, will have to close on Tuesday. Schools are converting to distance learning. Also, exit restrictions now apply 24 hours.

Chancellor Kurz announced a harsh “blockade”

Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) justified the harsh “lockdown” at a press conference by saying that previous measures had not sufficiently reduced the number of coronavirus infections. On the contrary, in some federal states such as Carinthia, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria there is an even greater exponential growth.

“Every social contact is too much”

The Chancellor appealed to the population to meet with just one person if possible: “Every social contact is too much.” Because only in this way can Christmas and the time before it be saved. Kurz also assured that the possibility of childcare in schools and kindergartens will continue to exist.

All personal service providers must also close. This applies to hairdressers, beauticians, and masseurs, for example. After the end of the closure, which is scheduled for December 7, schools and stores should be the first to reopen.

Trade is made up for part of lost sales

The business gets a part of its lost sales replaced by the “lock”. This was announced by Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) at the government press conference. However, not as many failures are compensated for as in the catering industry, where 80 percent were last set. In retail, it will be between 20 and 60 percent depending on the industry.

The cultural confinement runs until December 6

The new anti-crown measures announced by the federal government on Saturday bring to the cultural sector, above all, an extension of the ban on events that affect theaters, operas and concert halls and cinemas until December 6 inclusive. Due to the closure of most stores, galleries that were previously open will also have to close starting Tuesday. Museums and art galleries are closed.

Only in federal theaters does this mean a further postponement of four premieres (“Bunbury” on December 1 at the Akademietheater, “Richard II:” on December 2 at the Burgtheater, the ballet night “Mahler, Live” on December at the State Opera and the operetta “The Devil on Earth” on December 5 at the Volksoper). After all, according to the draft ordinance, rehearsals can continue to be conducted in accordance with safety concepts, so these premieres can be rescheduled for shortly after re-approval of events. In federal cinemas, according to the head of the holding Christian Kircher, anticipated sales for the first week of December had already been suspended if possible as a precautionary measure.
