886 new infections, including late reports in Carinthia

Statements about the effectiveness of the confinement are not yet possible – a new death – 45 more patients in the hospital – advice on visiting rules in hospitals and homes

In Carinthia, 886 new corona infections were reported on Wednesday. The extreme value on the upside is partly due to late reports last week, where there were problems with the EMS, the AGES database, said Gerd Kurath of the state press service in a video conference with journalists. The figures released since November 4, as already mentioned, were not valid, in reality the value was mostly around 400 daily or just below that.

“EMS should work again starting today,” Kurath said. In fact, 383 positive results were added in the last 24 hours. Statements on the effectiveness of the lockdown will likely only be made on Thursday or Friday. The number of patients requiring hospital care has “increased dramatically.” 45 new Covid 19 patients had to be admitted within 24 hours, a 90-year-old patient died in hospital. Currently 205 people are in a normal ward, 17 needed intensive medical treatment. 51 people have died with or from the virus in Carinthia since the start of the pandemic; there are currently 3,013 infected people registered.

Hospital treatment is no longer just necessary for the elderly and residents of nursing homes, but more and more people in their 50s or 60s. Kurath said: “There is still room for improvement, but it is increasing everywhere.” A total of 40 beds were available to Covid patients in Carinthia’s intensive care units, 17 of which are now occupied. The capacity of the normal beds was 335, of which the 205 beds mentioned above were occupied. The respective difference does not mean that these places are free and unused, Kurath confirmed. They would be available ‘on a daily basis’ as needed, for example, postponing interventions for other patients. And the 40 intensive care beds are not only available for Covid-19: “Intensive care beds in particular must also be kept ready for emergencies and accidents,” a broadcast from the regional press service said on Wednesday.

A coordination meeting was held on Wednesday on possible stricter visiting regulation for hospitals and nursing homes. So far, three hospitals in Carinthia (Friesach, St. Veit an der Glan and Spittal an der Drau) have banned visits; visits to nursing homes were still possible to a very limited extent. 19 out of a total of 79 nursing homes in Carinthia were affected by Covid-19 outbreaks. Currently 284 employees and residents were registered as infected.

Another problem was the long wait times for tests and test results. The deputy director of the Chamber of Commerce, Meinrad Höfferer, complained of major staff shortages, as he confirmed his statements to ORF Carinthia at the request of the APA. He made an “urgent demand on federal and state politicians” for faster results and rapid antigen tests for companies like those now also used in nursing homes.
