The Hungarian Prelate’s Prize is for the ORF journalists, “News” and “Addendum”

The Prälat-Leopold-Ungar-Journalist-Awards have already been awarded for the seventeenth time. This year, Christa Hofmann (ORF), Claudia Gschweitl (Ö1), Nina Strasser (“News”), as well as David Freudenthaler, Michael Mayrhofer and Philipp Pankraz (“Addendum”) were honored, Caritas announced.

The award, awarded by the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna and the Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich-Wien, is Austria’s most valuable journalistic award at € 20,000. Due to the crown, the award ceremony was held online.

Strasser was awarded in the Printing category for his contribution “How is Tante Helli?” (appeared in “News”) excellent. She was successful in “a disturbing text that brings to light the cruelty of a woodcut-like confinement for the elderly who depend on care and encouragement,” the jury said.

The top award in this year’s television category went to Hofmann for his world magazine “Syria – IS Legacy” in ORF 2. Hofman was one of the few journalists who visited former IS areas in northern Syria to beginning of the year. His half-hour report was said to be impressive and surprising.

Freudenthaler, Mayrhofer and Pankraz from “Addendum” received the top prize in the online category. In their multi-part podcast series “The Forgotten Hell”, they work on the history of the Gusen concentration camp. In doing so, they “used the possibilities of the podcast format as a complex narrative form, collected the atmosphere on the site and allowed authentic sounding voices to express their opinion.”

In the radio category, Gschweitl’s work received the title “Welcome to Weikendorf” in the “Hörbilder” series on Ö1. “Subtle, complex, balanced and difficult to digest” was awarded for the “wonderful radio piece”.

In addition, awards of recognition were presented in the four categories: for impression to Sophia Lang (“The World of Women”), Eja Kapeller (“Wienerin”) and Jana Reininger (“Datum”), in the category of TV Helene Voglreiter (ORF) and Alexander Bischofberger-Mahr (“krone.tv”) awarded. The radio awards went to Stefanie Jeller (Radio Klassik Stephansdom), Alina Sklenicka (Ö1) and Eva Gänsdorfer (Ö1). Valentine Auer (romnja.valentine-auer.at) received an award of recognition in the online category.
