There was an arrest in Vienna-Penzing on Wednesday. A driver escaped and headed towards the police. Therefore, an officer had to shoot.
Officials from the Fünfhaus city police station made stops in the Hütteldorfer Straße and Matznergasse area on Wednesday evening during a traffic planning plaza. Police were informed of a car coming from Matznergasse, which was obviously traveling at excessive speed.
When an officer asked the driver to stop with an arm signal, the latter stopped first and indicated through the driver’s window that he wanted to stop. Suddenly, the Viennese accelerated his vehicle and turned right onto Hütteldorfer Strasse to flee.
At that time there were two police officers on the Hütteldorfer Strasse road, who also tried to stop the vehicle. But the handlebars stayed on the throttle and ran straight for both cops. The officers had to jump to the side to avoid being run over by the car. One of the two policemen fired at the rear of the vehicle. That didn’t deter the suspect either, and he continued his escape down Kendlerstrasse. An immediate pursuit was unsuccessful.
Mann then surrendered
The driver, a 19-year-old Serbian citizen, turned himself in to a Vienna police station shortly after the incident and was arrested. It turned out that the vehicle had stolen license plates because the car was not properly registered.
The man also had other stolen license plates on his car. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office has now taken over the investigation. In the incident, the suspect suffered injuries of an unspecified degree, the Vienna Professional Rescue Service provided him with emergency medical attention at the scene and he was transferred to a hospital.
