Even then, the public thought that Griss would not dare to provide a rigorous analysis of the system failure in the banking scandal. But Griss was surprised. From their point of view, these three points are important:
The first point is that the president can choose his own commission. This is also important with the sensitive issue of intelligence services. “At the time, I had no idea about banking either. You have to look at how the processes normally look and where the errors occurred,” says Griss.
Back then, Griss quickly realized that he needed experts from abroad. There is a reason for this, according to Griss: “Too many are linked to each other in Austria. The fear that you will no longer get a job as an appraiser if the result is negative is too great.”
The second important point is that there are no restrictions on access to documents. Griss: “I signed a confidentiality clause at that time to get free access.”
The Hypo report of the Griss Commission was made available to the government and the public at the same time. “It cannot be that the ministry wants to approve the report before it is made public,” warns Griss.
Who else could be eligible?
There are many worthy names like Clemens Jabloner, Wolfgang Peschorn or former Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein who could take over the presidency. The problem: they were all members of the transitional government after the Ibiza scandal and could be considered biased.
