After the terrorist attack in Vienna and the most recent forays into the Islamist milieu, it is not only Interior Minister Karl Nehmammer (ÖVP), but also his wife and children under police protection. On Wednesday he confirmed to journalists that after threats, his family was receiving personal protection from professionals from the Cobra anti-terrorist unit.
Nehammer said the interior minister was not in danger. What’s new is that this scene now also threatens his wife and children. Neither he nor his family let this stop them, the minister emphasized.
Police protection also for female ministers
Interior Minister Nehammer and Integration Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) were already under police protection in July. The two members of the government received death threats on social media following the violent riots that followed demonstrations by Kurds and leftists that had been interrupted by Turkish ultra-nationalists and right-wing extremists.
Alma Zadic was protected by Cobra officials immediately after she was booed as justice minister in January. Due to his Bosnian origins, a wave of hateful messages and threats had been unleashed.
