Kaprun (dpa) – 20 years after the Kitzsteinhorn disaster, relatives have remembered the victims at the memorial in Kaprun. 155 skiers died on November 11, 2000 in the burning cable car in Austria. Due to Corona’s requirements, the commemoration was held on a limited basis this year. According to media reports, relatives were only allowed to enter the monument at the valley station in small groups.

The trigger for the fire in the glacier elevator was a fan heater at the end of the train. Most of the passengers escaped in the tunnel away from the flames towards the hill station. The deadly cloud of smoke caught up with them. Only twelve people came out of the tunnel alive, they had run down the stairs.

After a sensational trial, 16 defendants were acquitted in Salzburg in 2004. The monument was erected in the same year. 37 of the 155 fatalities came from Germany.
