Landeck – Another year of total closure: The bad news for the Landeck Basin came from the country yesterday afternoon. The closure of Landecker Straße (L76) will probably have to be extended until the beginning of the 2021/22 winter season. As reported, there are geological problems: large masses of rock in the wall above the construction site are loose.
There was already great excitement in May when the duration of the planned total lockdown was extended until the end of November due to the crown. The route between Landecker Südausfahrt and Fließer Au is now expected to remain closed for more than a year and a half.
We are aware that the new closure is a burden and we are doing our best to reopen the road as soon as possible. But there is no other way, the security risk is simply too high.

It’s all about safety, emphasizes Günter Guglberger, head of the department for bridge and tunnel construction in the state of Tirol. The route cannot be opened to traffic until the rock has been secured and the gallery wall on the mountainside has been completed. “You cannot rule out that fist-sized stones could break off,” not only in the area that had recently caused problems, but also in other rock faces along the road. “The risk is too great to pass the traffic.”
“We are aware that the additional closure is a burden and we are doing everything possible to reopen the road as quickly as possible,” says highway construction official LHStv. Josef Geisler. “We have two-thirds more rocks to clean up than planned and despite extensive safety measures, we cannot rule out the possibility of more rock breaks.”

The loose rock has to be removed partly by hand and partly with the help of a helicopter; blasting was not possible recently due to deep holes. If you hit solid rock again, “you’ll shoot,” says Guglberger. “The original plan was to remove 36,000 cubic meters of rock.” Now, 25,000 cubic meters have been added, and that in the most adverse conditions.
“It is technically understandable, but a medium catastrophe for the region,” emphasized the head of the city of Landeck, Thomas Hittler. I did not expect a ban of this scale. As a market town, Landeck hits the spot. Now there is a close alliance with Fließ and the Chamber of Commerce, they will try to initiate economic measures. “The gallery is being built for us,” he recalls. Nobody can do anything about construction problems. Despite all the difficulties, the country expects to complete the works of the castle gallery in the fourth quarter of 2022.
