On his first birthday at the Schönbrunn Zoo they served the polar bear “Pretend” a cake to his liking. Salmon, melons, and carrots are the favorite foods of the one-year-old polar bear. The ingredients were frozen in water. “The top one was full of salmon,” said “Finjas” animal handler Alessa Esau.

Director very satisfied with the development of “Finja”

“Finja” was born on November 9, 2019, exactly one year ago. “Our baby polar bear has developed very well. ‘Preja’ already weighs half her mother, about 120 kilograms,” said zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck. At birth, he weighed about 100 grams and was only the size of a guinea pig. 20,964 name suggestions were submitted. The goalkeepers opted for “Finja”, the white and beautiful one.

Playful water rat

According to her caregiver, “Pretend” is very playful and curious, which was also noticed on her birthday. “‘Nora’ and ‘Preja’ sniffed the iced cake immediately. ‘Nora’ took the first one and ate it, while ‘Preja’ eagerly cut the rest of the iced cake.” There were also toys for the young polar bear as a gift, which the water rat immediately took to the pool.

Support with sponsorship of the heart

If you want to support the currently closed zoo, you can sponsor the polar bear girl’s heart with an online donation of € 15 at www.zoovienna.at. According to the zoo, there is a certificate and name entry on the zoo’s home page.
