The qualifying match for the European Championship scheduled for Sunday night between the Austrian handball men in Bugojno against Bosnia-Herzegovina has been canceled. As the local association (ÖHB) announced on Saturday evening, the local authorities had quarantined the opponent after several positive corona tests in the latest series of tests. The match cannot be played, the Austrians will return home on Sunday.
“The curious situation arose that we were already on the charter plane and we received the message from our secretary general Bernd Rabenseifner immediately after landing that there are again problems due to positive cases of Covid with the Bosnia-Herzegovina national team,” Said ÖHB sporting director Patrick Fölser.
Austria, who won their qualifying match against Estonia on Wednesday in Graz with a heavily flipped side with 31:28, should have given up eleven players on Sunday due to cancellations, injuries and crown cases. The Bosnians only lost 21:25 in Germany on Thursday, although they only had eleven healthy players available. Previously, an application to move the game to the EHF had failed.
