Austria Wien is on the spot in the Bundesliga

Wiener Austria only advances with great difficulty. In the seventh Bundesliga match with neo-coach Peter Stöger, the Viennese mainly disappointed on offense and were well served with a 0-0 draw at SCR Altach (match report >>>).

If the defensive performance was good, Austria had a hard time creating scoring opportunities. The offensive forces in Vorarlberg were mostly in the air and to make matters worse, forward Christoph Monschein had to leave the pitch early with an ankle ligament injury.

“I don’t have 10, 15 chances to score”

Austria coach Peter Stöger was satisfied with his defense in an interview with Sky, but also emphasized the lack of solutions on offense: “We couldn’t secure the balls to be able to play through the last chain.” Only in the last few minutes was his team able to create a bit of danger with substitute Patrick Wimmer: “In the final round we had one or two chances that we didn’t take advantage of.

Stöger also justified the fact that in the current situation fireworks were not expected from his team with previous games. After a weak performance on both ends of the field against TSV Hartberg last week, he wanted to perform with his team at Altach from a compact defense.

At least their own ranks could be closed and “Altach’s two or three chances, Pentz defended them very well,” Stöger praised his goalkeeper.

Offensive players far from the best form

The defensive performance of Ländle’s rival, which improved from the previous week, did the rest, as Austria lost a goal for the second time in the last three games. Only in last week’s loss at Hartberg was a goal celebrated.

“If the opponent does well and is well organized, then we cannot assume that we have 10 or 15 chances to score,” the Austria coach said in plain language. “A few, because you have to take advantage of something, then you get more space,” Stöger denounced the fact that his kickers did not take advantage of the opportunities.

In fact, the offensive series around youngsters Sarkaria, Pichler and Wimmer currently appears to lack the nonchalance that was seen, at least partially, last year. And Christoph Monschein was completely up in the air in the last few games as well, which in turn is due to the more defensive approach of the entire team.

Patience is required

Anyone hoping for a quick recovery after Stöger’s return to the distribution circle learned otherwise with the game at Altach at the latest. They have been sorely missed in recent years and therefore violets are far behind the environment’s expectations in sporting terms.

At least Stöger is currently calm and demands patience with the young team. The international break gives him and his team the opportunity to continue working on offensive procedures.

As was again evident in Altach, this is urgently needed to increase the gap with the lowest spots in the coming weeks. Because that was also impressively demonstrated with the Ländle appearance, that’s the only thing Austria can do at the moment.
