Last year’s winner, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), built another small lead in the fight for overall victory in the Vuelta. The 31-year-old Slovenian finished second on Friday in the 16th stage after 162 kilometers from Salamanca to Ciudad Rodrigo and thus received a six-second time credit, with which he extended his overall advantage from 39 to 45 seconds over the pursuer Richard Carapaz ( ECU).

The day’s victory on the mountainous stage was secured by Danish Magnus Cort Nielsen, who won the sprint final of the group of 32 leaders just ahead of Roglic. The third place went to Rui Costa from Portugal. The Austrian Felix Großschartner of the Bora team was again strong as seventh of the stage. In the overall standings, the 26-year-old is 7:20 minutes behind Roglic in seventh place.

The last arrival on the mountain of the 75th Vuelta is scheduled for Saturday as part of the 17th stage. The route leads from Sequeros more than 178.2 kilometers to Alto de La Covatilla (1,980 m). Before that, there are three mountain classifications in the third category, one in the second and one in the first category.
