On Sunday (LIVE ticker from 5:00 p.m.) the main match Rapid Vienna will take place against RB Salzburg in the last Bundesliga match before the international break. The leader of the Salzburg table, who has not yet yielded a point, meets his first rival in Vienna-Hütteldorf.
Only two points separate the two teams before the confrontation. Coach Jesse Marsch’s men want to expand their lead and Rapid with coach Didi Kühbauer has a chance to overtake the bulls after the mixed performance in the Europa League.
Salzburg wants to “rotate a little less”
Under the leadership of coach Jesse Marsch, the Bulls have won all five of their previous games with Rapid. Furthermore, following their 6-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday in the Champions League, Salzburg had a two-day hiatus longer than Hütteldorfer after their 4-3 Europa League defeat against Dundalk. Marsch, therefore, wants to “rotate a little less” compared to the last few weeks than in previous league games.
“The last game before the international break is again a lot. And we want to enter with fresh players and full of vigor,” said the American. “We are in very good physical shape and we are recovering well after the Bayern game.” At the same time, however, Marsch warned against Hütteldorfern. “Rapid have a similar pace to ours and so far they have played very well and successfully, especially in the Bundesliga. With Marcel Ritzmaier they have signed a good newcomer and are therefore even more compact.”
The midfielder was absent from Rapid against Dundalk. Taxiarchis Fountas is also still in doubt after his metacarpal fracture. But Marsch hoped the Greeks would work. In the case of bulls, only the long-lasting injuries Antoine Bernede (shin fracture) and Patson Daka (thigh injury) are not available. In Daka’s absence, Mergim Berisha and Sekou Koita are likely to re-form the duo of storms. The options are also Noah Okafor and Karim Adeyemi.
Wöber warns of the former club
Aside from Daka, Salzburg is likely to reach Hütteldorf with an eleven almost identical to the historic 7-2 against empty ranks in June. Rapid had not conceded seven goals in any other postwar league game. The Verdiblancos will seek redress.
“Rapid is our first pursuer and they will certainly do their best to at least not let the gap between us get any bigger,” Salzburg defender Maximilian Wöber said of his former club. “And they will probably also want to return the favor of the last 2: 7 in Vienna. So we have to prepare for a very motivated and aggressive opponent.”
The finally clear defeats against Bayern should no longer resonate with the series champions. “We will bring out the positive from the Champions League game, and that is that we challenge the Champions League champions for 80 minutes and bring them to the brink of defeat,” Wöber said. “And even if it sounds strange after 2: 6, we showed a very good performance against them. We want to take that with us for the match with Rapid.”
Salzburg have lost just one of the most recent 19 competitive games with Hütteldorfer. The league has recently recorded ten wins in a row, six of them this season. Throughout the seasons, the Bulls are unbeaten in 17 league games.
The last defeat so far was in early March, before the first crown lock, at Altach (2: 3). Rapid recorded their only points loss this Bundesliga season in mid-September due to a 1-1 draw at Sturm Graz.
