The Danish Magnus Cort Nielsen achieved victory in the 16th and third of the last stage of the Tour of Spain. Felix Großschartner continues to surprise.
Rodrigo City. The Danish Magnus Cort Nielsen claimed victory on Friday in the 16th and third of the last stage of the 75th Tour of Spain. The 27-year-old won after 162 kilometers from Salamanca to Ciudad Rodrigo ahead of Primoz Roglic. Thanks to the time credit, the Slovenian extended his overall lead over Richard Carapaz (ECU) from six to 45 seconds before Saturday’s final mountain stage. Felix Großschartner held seventh overall as seventh of the day.
On Saturday, the 178 kilometers to the end of the mountain in the Paso de Covatilla (1,965 m) will make the decision on the overall victory. In section 16, last year’s winner Roglic’s jumbo team didn’t have to show up until the final, other racing teams took over the chase job behind a breakaway group. The runner-up of this year’s Tour de France can also count on a stronger team than ex-Giro winner Carapaz at Ineos in the final showdown.
The Upper Austrian Großschartner reached the finish line in the first group, which had been reduced to around 30 drivers, and was again in the lead in the sprint. His place in the top ten in the overall standings was secured by 3:31 minutes. Wout Poels (NED), sixth-placed, was 59 seconds ahead of the 26-year-old Bora pro.
