On the night of the Vienna attack, the assassin was quickly eliminated, but not all the officers who arrived first were equipped with the necessary weapon.

Instead of an assault rifle, they only carried Glocks with them, as confirmed by the head of the Vienna Police Union, Gerhard Zauner (FCG), a “courier” report to the APA.

Due to the crisis in the crown: not all officials are trained in assault rifles

The reason: due to the crisis in the crown, not all officials have been trained to handle the assault rifle.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, some police training courses were suspended and only the most important ones were held, Zauner reported. “It would be desirable” to have full equipment, which means “two in each patrol” for the unionist. According to Zauner, there would be a sufficient number of these precision weapons, but they won’t be fully equipped until all of them have been trained. This should be finished before the end of the year and the weapons should be handed over to the officers.

Only 14 police units in the city of Vienna are equipped with assault rifles

In Vienna, for example, only 14 city police units are equipped with it. But this does not refer to the special units like Cobra and Wega. On Monday night, the first officers to arrive did not yet have an assault rifle. Only officials from the Vienna Alarm Department (WEGA) were able to eliminate the perpetrator. Assault rifles are more powerful and much more accurate, especially at a distance, Zauner said. “And the scope is crucial for such an operation,” said the unionist. The Glock is more designed for short distances.
