SK Rapid can celebrate their first victory in the UEFA Europa League group stage! Hütteldorfer beat Dundalk 4: 3 and thus preserves the possibility of the round of 32.
The guests from Ireland are seven minutes ahead. After a high ball into Gannon’s penalty area, Patrick Hoban was able to use his body in a duel and put a header on goal. The fast-paced goalkeeper Gartler slips and thus seems a bit unhappy with his failed defense.
In the 22nd minute, the locals tied: captain Dejan Ljubicic cheers up and simply starts from a good 25 meters. Again, everyone else’s goalkeeper looks good, because the ball that hits the center of the goal falls exactly between Dundalk’s goalkeeper and the crossbar.
After that, both Rapid (44th / Knasmüller) and Dundalk (29th / Duffy) each have a great opportunity, but they go 1-1 at halftime. The guests from Ireland with a brave first half and Rapid with very few ideas in the last third.
In the 54th minute, Mateo Barac had to be substituted after falling with a bloody nose in a collision with his own goalkeeper. After 60 minutes, the hosts were lucky when the referee failed to call a foul by Hofmann on Duffy in the penalty area.
Substitute Demir brings a lot of momentum to the party and is involved in two good chances for the Viennese, but the Austrian champions’ chances leave a lot to be desired.
In the 79th minute it was Kelvin Arase who got ahead of Rapid. The Dundalk goalkeeper only bounces off a Schick ball in the middle, Arase has the right and heads.
Just two minutes after the lead there is a penalty for Dundalk. Sonnleitner doesn’t see his opponent coming from behind and grabs him. McMillan converted the penalty kick into a 2-2 draw.
At 87, Rapid took the lead again: the Dundalk goalkeeper was wrong after a long pass from Stojkovic and Hofmann headed in. Three minutes later, Yusuf Demir made it all clear with the 4: 2 score. The 17-year-old uses the space he gets in the penalty area and dries to the bottom right corner.
In injury time there is another penalty for the guests after a clear foul by Stojkovic in his own penalty area. McMillan hits again from the point and shortens it to 3: 4.
After that, however, it is over and the Hütteldorfer can celebrate their first points of the EL season.
