The president of the United States, Donald Trump, is trying to change the elections in his favor with lawsuits. The campaign has been running for months. But do you have any chance of success? Four questions, four answers.
For months, Trump’s campaign team has been preparing campaigns and lawsuits against vote counting and mail-in ballots for political reasons. The reason is that Democrats always do better than Republicans with mail-in voters. That’s why Trump and his aides did everything in the run-up to the election. discredit the process, complicate it, and prevent voters from casting their vote. Even the postal system was deliberately weakened. As a result, many votes did not even reach the authorities in time.
The second part of the campaign is beginning now: The Trump team is taking more lawsuits against vote counting in particularly contested states. That is why he wants to avoid a victory for Democrat Joe Biden. In some cases, they also target districts particularly dominated by Democratic voters. Where Trump is ahead, Republicans want to stop the count. Where Biden is ahead, the count must continue.
But what chance do Trump’s team and his aides in the US administration have with their electoral manipulation strategies? An overview.
Where is Trump’s team attacking the vote count?
In at least four major “battlefield” states, where Trump’s team sees the possibility of achieving success by suppressing votes already cast for the opponent. Up to this point: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Nevada. Most of the lawsuits demand the nullity of votes that did not reach the authorities until after election day. Others claim that Republican election watchers do not have sufficient access to the count. Witnesses deny it.

In Wisconsin Trump also demands a recount in the face of a close race. It is not known with certainty on what basis and if his team will actually sue. There, Republicans have already successfully demanded the recount of votes that did not arrive until after Election Day. Joe Biden won the state anyway.
What are the possibilities of the lawsuits?
This is hard to say. While Republicans have already failed with many preliminary legal advances, they were able to enter Minnesota Y Wisconsin they also have great successes. There, votes that had not arrived on election day were declared invalid. This was justified by a decision of the Supreme Court of the United States. Especially the judges appointed by Trump himself are increasingly making decisions in his favor.
A similar demand for Pennsylvania it was not decided in favor of Trump by the chief justices before the election. A new presentation after the election is not excluded. So far, the Pennsylvania attorney general has called one of the recent lawsuits “more of a political document than a legal one.” If a dispute over a decisive state really ends there, Trump has the advantage of his self-appointed judges.
Will the Supreme Court have something to say?
Trump cannot just go to the so-called Supreme Court. In fact, it would first have to go through the jurisdiction of the affected states. There should be a relevant number of votes to debate that could decide the outcome of the entire election. American legal experts see no evidence of this so far.
Could Trump get there any other way?
The current president’s false claims that electoral fraud is taking place are fueling tensions and could escalate into violence. The Trump campaign has publicly called on its supporters to “fight back.” Some armed Trump supporters already besiege electoral authorities in Detroit and Arizona. If there were riots or if votes were declared invalid due to lawsuits, it cannot be ruled out that Trump’s opponents will also take to the streets.
US security agencies have been warning of far-right attacks and violence for weeks. The more the situation escalates, the sooner the federal government will have a case to send security forces or even the military to the states. This also increases the chances that Trump will influence the outcome of the election. For example, the Justice Department politically captured by Trump has already encouraged its prosecutors to send armed federal officials to election offices to investigate suspected “voter fraud.” What that would mean for the additional count is still unclear.
