Those affected were between 69 and 95 years old, the country’s crisis team announced Thursday afternoon. The number of infected people in the state increased from 1,540 to 9,822. More than 25,000 people are in quarantine. Nursing homes are particularly affected: 298 employees and 306 residents fell ill at these facilities.
Alternative rooms in planning
The situation in hospitals is tense: as of Thursday noon, 593 Covid-19 patients were in normal wards. Alternative neighborhoods are being planned, but the decision on locations was still open Thursday. During the first wave, the state installed 595 additional hospital beds in boarding houses or educational homes for sick people who do not need intensive care. At that time, however, these were not necessary.
More and more people are in intensive care units, where 71 corona patients are currently being treated. According to the AGES dashboard, 62 intensive care beds were still vacant in the state on Thursday. More recently in Upper Austria it was said that there were 243 intensive care beds, the number could be increased to 270, 358 and, in a third step, even 420. The problem could be staff.
More employees in contact tracking
You also reach your limits with contact tracing. Currently, more than 200 people from the Upper Austrian district authorities are involved in following up the contacts. The country has already created a group of 72 employees to assist the district authorities. This group will increase to a total of 180 employees next week. For this, state employees are called in, as well as members of the armed forces and specially recruited outside aides.
