Attack in Vienna: According to the Interior Minister, the attacker acted alone

The Austrian authorities assume that there was only one perpetrator in the terrorist attack in central Vienna. Interior Minister Karl Nehammer announced it at a press conference.

Review of more than 20,000 eyewitness videos and surveillance cameras confirmed the theory of a single offender, Nehammer said. “What became visible at the same time is the brutality and cruelty with which the perpetrators acted.”

On Monday night, an Islamist attacker killed four people and wounded a total of 22 other people. On Tuesday, 14 people close to the man were arrested. They are between 18 and 28 years old, have a migration background and are partly non-Austrian citizens, Nehammer said.

The attacker was warned by the Slovak police.

More recently, the Slovak police had stated that the gunman had been caught when he was trying to buy ammunition before the attack. So said a police spokeswoman for the Slovak TV station TA3.

“The Slovak police received information in the summer that suspected persons from Austria were trying to buy ammunition in Slovakia. However, they were unable to make the purchase,” wrote the Bratislava police headquarters on Facebook. The information was immediately forwarded to the Austrian police. No further information is desired so as not to jeopardize the investigations in Austria.

Nehammer confirmed the statements of the Slovak authorities. Something went wrong with communication between the two countries, the interior minister said. He announced that this would be clarified by an independent commission of inquiry.
