For Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP), many things went wrong in the run-up to the Vienna attack. He sees errors in the protection of the constitution, which was damaged by his predecessor Herbert Kickl (FPÖ).
43 hours after the attack, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer still had many questions. He said that Wednesday afternoon, shortly after 4 p.m., at a press conference. “Who is to blame must be answered clearly; it is always the perpetrator.” The police did an excellent job with their special Wega unit that night, “in nine minutes they managed to eliminate the perpetrator.” But before that, things went wrong, the interior minister admitted.
“The perpetrator was perfectly able to fool the de-radicalization program, he was released from custody early.” For the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Justice, the question arises of how to deal with threats in the future. Something went wrong in the communication between the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight Against Terrorism (BVT) and the Slovak secret service. The Slovaks had informed the Viennese about the planned purchase of ammunition by the 20-year-old terrorist attacker.
The minister now wants to create an independent inquiry commission. Nehammer openly criticizes his predecessor Herbert Kickl (FPÖ). During his tenure, the “old constitutional protection” was permanently damaged, if not destroyed, he said. This created a dangerous situation for Austria. The BVT reform has been worked feverishly for months.
