As with many events, observers filmed the perpetrator and the exchange of gunfire during the terrorist attack on Monday night in Vienna. One video is circulating on the Internet in particular, and it triggers a trend that reaches the United States.
The much-discussed video sequence shows the following: A stranger films from an apartment in the center of Vienna onto the street below. You don’t see anything for a long time, then the killer appears briefly in the video. He walks along the wall of the house, stops to shoot twice. As he continues on his way, a call breaks the silence after the explosion: “Schleich di, you Oaschloch!” One of the witnesses in the apartment wants to tell the perpetrator: “You are not welcome!”
And because the exclamation shows so much courage and is “typically Viennese” at the same time, it gets a lot of attention on social media. Many Austrians, especially Viennese, share it as a sign of resistance. The unique statement in the video is even enthusiastically received around the world. The phrase already appeared on Twitter in its English translation “Get lost, asshole” and reached the United States.
On the social media platform, users thank the “caller from the balcony” for his bravery, draw strength from it and share his phrase as a statement of solidarity.
With this exclamation, the Viennese probably pronounced the sentence of the year. In all its sadness and hope.
