At least four people were killed by the 20-year-old killer in central Vienna. Before the perpetrator himself was shot several times, he had also shot a patrolman in the leg. According to the police, the largest security police operation of the Austrian police in its existence was carried out on Monday.
The attack in Vienna: first emergency calls at 8:00 p.m.
At around 8pm, the emergency number for the Vienna police received several calls after shots were heard in the Seitenstettengasse area in the city center. According to witnesses, several men are said to have fired long guns at passersby and injured them. A major operation followed. The population was immediately told to avoid the area.
First exchange of gunfire with the police: WEGA shot 20-year-olds at 8:09 pm
Shortly after the shooting, patrol officers noticed the heavily armed attacker and there was an initial exchange of gunfire. A patrol officer suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. At 8:09 pm, a sector patrol from the WEGA special unit noticed the perpetrator in the Ruprechtsplatz area. He was armed with a fully automatic rifle (Kalashnikov), a pistol and a machete. In addition, he carried an object around his body that was modeled on an explosive belt and was counted as such when intervening.
Two men and two women died that night in Vienna.
Police fired several shots at him while trying to arrest the attacker. The 20-year-old died instantly from his injuries. He had previously shot bystanders and police officers. During the nine minutes between the attack and the neutralization of the known perpetrator, two women and two men were fatally injured and another 22 people were injured, some seriously, at various crime scenes.

According to the first investigation, there were at least four crime scenes in the vicinity of Seitenstettengasse. There were incidents in two other places where people were injured. To what extent these incidents are related was still unclear Tuesday. Investigators were busy creating a so-called route / time diagram and witness interviews were conducted, through which the police hoped to obtain more detailed information on the possible involvement of other people.
On Tuesday night, the police reiterated their urgent call to the population to report any evidence and observations about the attack to the police.
