At around 8pm, the emergency number for the Vienna police received several calls after shots were heard in the Seitenstettengasse area in the city center. At 8:09 pm, a sector patrol from the WEGA special unit noticed the perpetrator in the Ruprechtsplatz area. He was armed with a fully automatic rifle (Kalashnikov), a pistol and a machete. Two men and two women died that night in Vienna.
Police fired several shots at him while trying to arrest the attacker. The 20-year-old died instantly from his injuries. He had previously shot bystanders and police officers.
