IOn social media, two young men are praised for their selfless work during the Islamist terrorist attack in Vienna. Recep Gültekin and Mikail Özen helped an elderly woman and an injured police officer on Monday night, while shots were still being fired, as can be seen in videos on social media.

“We wanted to have the last coffee before curfews and we ended up in the middle of the battle,” Özen described the situation on Instagram. According to their own statements, the two martial artists heard gunshots and saw bystanders bleeding at Schwedenplatz in central Vienna. A local resident recorded the dramatic scenes from his apartment on an upper floor.

According to their own statements, the two men first helped an elderly woman to safety. After that, they saw an injured policeman. “We couldn’t just watch. We ran there and took him to the ambulance, ”Özen said. The two Viennese risked their own lives, as you can see from the photos.

Videos on his Instagram account show how the men were injured and bleeding. But even after their mission, they seemed completely calm. Gültekin had to be treated at the hospital for what he said was a “small gunshot wound” to his leg.

The men harshly condemned the act: “We Muslims of Turkish descent abhor any kind of terror, we support Austria, we defend Vienna,” Özen declared.

“The fight against Islamist terrorism is our common fight”

The capital of Austria is in shock. After the terrorist attack in Vienna on Monday night, the President of France and Chancellor Merkel have spoken out. Macron emphasized: “We will not give up.”
