“My friend and I had brief eye contact and we knew what to do. There was no other option but to help, ”says Mikail Özen. Amid the terrible events that occurred in Vienna on Monday night, there were also two heroes.
The two men of Turkish origin, Mikail Özen and Recep Gültekin, did not hesitate and immediately came to the aid of the people. Including a seriously injured police officer who was shot.
In fact, the two wanted to have one last coffee before the confinement, when suddenly the shots rang out. “People were lying on the ground, some fled in blood,” Özen describes the scenes.
Shot by the perpetrator
The two friends were about to park their car on Schwedenplatz when they heard the shots. Recep Gültekin saw a woman lying on the ground outside, ran out of the car and came to her aid, says his friend. Gültekin was shot by a perpetrator.
“The attacker shot him. Recep was intuitively able to save himself with a somersault. It has a splinter, ”Özen describes the scenes. The two drove to the nearest police station and described the situation to officers. Gültekin was also able to provide a description of the perpetrator.
So, the martial artists really wanted to get out of the first district. “But then we saw an old woman, she got into the action, unprepared,” says Özen. Therefore, they went back outside and took the woman to safety. Then they shot up again.
Severely injured police officers rescued
“We crouched down and saw a policeman lying on the ground, he was bleeding to death. We looked at each other briefly and said ‘run,'” Özen says of the situation. “We knew immediately what to do, there was no other option but to help,” says Özen. The two men took the policeman to the ambulance.
The two heroes are celebrated on social media for their selfless commitment during the attack. Özen reports on the events on Instagram and in a video on Twitter.
