As confirmed on a Tuesday morning, the Interior Ministry carried out several house searches “around the perpetrator.” Several people have been arrested, the Interior Ministry said.

The series of attacks also claimed numerous serious injuries. One of them is a police officer who was injured while on duty and whose condition was described Tuesday morning as critical but stable. Meanwhile, the number of wounded has increased. 17 people were treated in the Vienna hospitals, of whom at least six were seriously injured.

Authorities continue to assume that several terrorists were involved in the attack and upheld their warnings to stay home and avoid the center in particular. Compulsory schooling in the federal capital was suspended for Tuesday. If the parents cannot take care of the children, they can take them to the educational institution.

People called to stay at home

After the terrorist attack, the city center of Vienna can be reached again by public transport. Wiener Linien has been on the road without restrictions since operations began on Tuesday, the company announced. He approached all the stations again, including those in the city of Vienna. That was agreed with the Interior Ministry task force, according to a spokesperson. The planned installation of the Christmas tree at Rathausplatz for the morning was canceled.

According to the Interior Minister, the attacker who was killed was wearing a fictitious explosive belt and his name is identified. The general director of Public Security, Franz Ruf, reported that that night his apartment was opened with explosives and a house search was carried out.

Seven police officers used their service weapons during the terrorist attack on Monday night. According to the chairman of the Vienna State Police, Gerhard Pürstl, the attacker was “neutralized” at 8:09 pm by agents of the Vienna Working Group Alarm Department (WEGA).

The attack had started around 8 p.m. at Seitenstettengasse in the lively Bermuda-Dreieck nightlife district, where many people were outside shortly before the start of the new crown curfews and in mild weather. Following the first emergency call to the police and the arrival of the emergency services, shootings broke out between the police and the perpetrators. A policeman was shot and seriously injured.

The executive’s large-scale operation continued overnight. 150 Cobra and 100 Wega officers were on duty, in addition to several 100 patrolmen and civil servants. The armed forces were also activated. Soldiers took over all property protection in the federal capital to relieve the police and parts of the hunting squad were provided to support the fight against terrorism.

The police urged not to distribute videos or photos of the events in the city center, but to make such material available to the police. A loading platform has been created for this purpose; it can be accessed at https://upload.bmi.gv.at.
